Bryson DeChambeau WITB
Last year’s US Open winner Bryson DeChambeau has been labelled one of the most interesting golfers playing at the moment. This is down to his unique training style and approach to golf. He won the US open by six shots and was the only player to break par. As this year’s US open approaches (play begins on the 17th June), we take an in-depth look at one of golf’s most unique players.
Bryson DeChambeau: What’s in the Bag
Unlike other golfers all Bryson DeChambeau’s clubs are the same length. This is not something you’d typically expect to see on the golf course so let’s dig a little deeper.
His driver is the Cobra RadSpeed Prototype. Last year he used the Cobra King LTD-Pro 7.5 degrees and it was key for helping DeChambeau achieve the infamous length on his shots.
DeChambeau uses the Cobra King-Prototype 10.5 degrees.
DeChambeau opts for the Cobra King One Length Utility (4. 5) and the Cobra King Forged Tour One Length. He also likes the Cobra King Speedzon Tour 4 and 5.
For the last two years DeChambeau has used the Artisan-Prototype 50 and 52 degrees.
DeChambeau uses the SIK pro C (arm-lock). The arm-lock style enables greater control on the putting green and increases the chance of better face angles at impact.
DeChambeau’s Unusual Style
DeChambeau has surprised the golf world in a number of ways. He has been nicknamed ‘the scientist’ because of his meticulous approach to every shot and because of the changes he’s made to his game and equipment.
Bryson DeChambeau Grip
DeChambeau uses JumboMax UltraLite XL grips. These grips are much thicker than your traditional golf grip and add weight to his clubs. However, he has countered this problem of extra weight by using lightweight shafts for his clubs. He holds his clubs with the palms of his hands instead of his fingers. This unconventional style has led to some comparing the way he holds a golf club to the way you might hold a baseball bat or tennis racket.
Bryson DeChambeau’s Power
One of the most noticeable things about DeChambeau is the power in his drive which gives incredible speed to his shots. This power has been credited to the 20lbs he gained during the three month lockdown. He has been putting on muscle and consuming a high protein diet. His breakfast is rumoured to include five slices of bacon, four eggs, toast and two protein shakes. He is consuming around 400g of protein as opposed to the recommended 85g for someone of his body type. Whilst this diet definitely isn’t suitable for everyone, the focus on muscle buildup is unusual in golf.
Stretching and training the muscles of his upper body has enabled DeChambeau to add greater rotation to his swing and improve his flexibility. This has enabled him to achieve that increased swing speed and hit the ball at such a fast rate. Tiger Woods has helped transform how players think about their physical fitness and now hours in the gym are an essential part of training for most players on the professional circuit.
Bryson DeChambeau’s Arm-Lock Putting Style
As if he wasn’t ignoring the status quo enough already, DeChambeau has an unconventional putting style. The arm-lock style has been used by professionals Webb Simpson and Matt Kuchar in the past and is one of a range of styles available to players on the PGA Tour. Because the putter is abnormally long, players can rest the putter shaft against their lead arm which secures the lead wrist. This gives them more control over the putting arc.
DeChambeau’s form has transformed since using the arm-lock putting style. In 2017 DeChambeau finished 145th on TOUR in Strokes Gained: Putting. In the second half of 2017 he committed to the method and this has reflected in the changes in this number ever since. He was 32nd in 2018, 28th in 2019 and 10th in 2020. This is a significant improvement and seems to be the case that the change is paying off.
